Why this exists

Thousands of NYC nonprofits need volunteers, but their positions go unfilled — not because people don’t care, but because they never see them. Opportunities are buried across fragmented websites, posted with no consideration for who’s actually looking. The desire to help is there. The connection isn’t.

ServiceWeekly bridges that gap — one curated email, every week, connecting the right volunteers with the right causes.

Questions

Is this actually free?

Yes — completely. Students pay nothing, and charities pay nothing to list opportunities. We may eventually add a paid option for schools or organizations that want premium placement or analytics, but the core weekly email for students will always be free.

How do I know the hours will count?

Every opportunity in the digest is tagged for whether it counts toward the major service standards: the NYC DOE Chancellor’s 100-hour Service Endorsement, the National Honor Society requirement, and most college applications. Requirements vary slightly between schools, so the safest move is to confirm with your college counselor or service coordinator before you start. As a general rule, structured volunteering with a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides a documented sign-in or completion letter will qualify almost everywhere.

What if I’m not in NYC?

Right now ServiceWeekly is NYC-only. We only curate opportunities we can personally vouch for, which means staying close to home for the moment. If you would like the same email for your city, reply to any drop with the city name and we will add you to that waitlist. Once a single city reaches 50 waitlisters, we begin building it out. Until then, you are welcome to stay subscribed to the NYC list, but most opportunities will not be reachable from where you are.

How do you pick the opportunities?

Each Sunday we pull listings from 8+ NYC volunteer sources, including NYC Service, New York Cares, TeenLife, Volunteer New York, and direct submissions from charities themselves. We filter for opportunities that are actively open to teenagers, transit-accessible from at least one borough, and complete enough that you can sign up without needing an introduction. From that pool, we pick the 10–15 best for the week, deliberately rotating across causes (climate, education, hunger, animals, civic, healthcare, arts) so the email never feels repetitive. Every listing is reviewed by a human before it goes out.

Are you collecting student data?

We collect only your email address — nothing else, ever. No name, no school, no age, no analytics scripts, no tracking pixels, no third-party integrations beyond Buttondown (which sends the actual email) and Google Fonts (for typography). We do not sell, share, or rent the subscriber list to anyone, ever, for any reason. If you would like to see exactly what we hold on you, or have us delete it, reply to any drop and we will respond within a week.

Can I unsubscribe?

Yes — one click in any email. An unsubscribe link sits in the footer of every drop. As soon as you click it, you are removed from the list immediately and we permanently delete your email address from our records within 30 days. We will not ask you why you are leaving, will not try to win you back, and will not email you again. If you change your mind later, you can re-subscribe from the website at any time.
